Anime rose in western culture in the 1960s, although the creation of Japanese Animation (Anime) dates back to the 1940s. The father of Anime is often considered to be Osamu Tezuka who first introduced his vision to the eastern culture with Astro Boy.
Tezuka-s work made it to western shores in the early 1960s with much enthusiasm. This was followed by Speed Racer, which aired 52-episodes from 1967-1968. From the final airing of Speed Racer, the fanfare of Anime subsided and the market dried up.
It wasn-t until 1988 when Akira hit western theaters that anime made its triumphant return. The idea of animation being something for adults was new to western cultures. Historically, animation was for children and held no mature interests. Akira-s dark and violent storyline changes this mentality.
In the early 1990s with the introduction of Pokmon, the future was set for anime on western shores. The popularity of Pokmon spun such series as Yu-Gi-Oh!, Sailor Moon and Dragon Ball. Each of these was iconic anime adventures that captivated western culture.
Since this time, there has been little change in the popularity of anime. From children to adults, anime art, dynamics and concepts have dominated the market.
